#WHYFARGO

The #whyfargo project was created as a way to engage the community and find out more about those who also call Fargo, ND 'home'.

In April 2013 North Dakota State University's Department of Architecture and Landscape Architecture was fortunate enough to have
Candy Chang come speak at our annual Beaux Arts gala. Beaux Arts is a night to celebrate the allied arts of architecture, landscape architecture and interior design here are North Dakota State University. Candy was wonderful to have, she spoke of simple ways we can work to find out more about our community and the people around us, about how we can use simple information to make our communities and our cities better.  This inspired my classmates and I to find our own way to connect with the Fargo community and learn from those around us.

This is how the
#whyfargo project was born. Inspired by the work of Candy Chang, our studio professor gave us the option to do out own "Urban Chang"  project with the last three weeks of class. So, with this project presented to us, myself and four classmates created the #whyfargo project. We pondered for a few days on just what we wanted to do and how we wanted to do it. The questions we had for the Fargo community dealt with wanting to know why they lived in Fargo and what brought them here. Fargo tends to get a bad reputation sometimes for its freezing (and this year never ending) winters, constant wind and middle of no where location. While all of these are true about Fargo there are some really great things about this city as well and while each of us had our own reasons, we wanted to see what other people's reasons were. So we boiled down the prompt to simply whyfargo in hopes of getting all types of responses from people in their interpretation of the question.

The responses we got were amazing. Within only a few hours the boards were beginning to fill up. There were humorous responses, like,
"because it's cold enough to have penguins"

to those messages about the weather
 "prolonged winters"    "snow in April"

to messages of love
"art is love"    "love is love"    "Sydney loves Caleb!"

and messages about the atmosphere
"running friendly"    "simple life"    "better opportunities"     "cheap tuition"

But overwhelmingly, the biggest response were messages about the people in our fair city. These messages speak to what the people of Fargo value the most: the other people who make living here worthwhile.
"real people"    "family"    "country boys"    "good people"    "the good life and friendly people"
"because we're hard workers"     "it's a lovely town"

All of these responses and the hundred more we received on the boards and through social media gave me insight into what people value about Fargo, ND. Seeing all of these messages reminded me that I am not here alone but rather that I am a part of a wonderful community of people, some of whom took the time to enlighten me through engaging with this board.  What I was amazed to see was that, regardless of what it was that brought people to Fargo, it seems to be the genuine people that keep them here and what they value about our city.

After seeing these reasons spelled out before me I realized that it is the people that have also kept me here.  I came to Fargo for school, NDSU has a wonderful architecture program and I came here for that. What I have discovered in my four years here is that the people here are genuine, kind, and all around wonderful. I have met some of the best people in this city and it is one of things that brings me back year after year.  These people are my family and Fargo is my home.

So in the end, we all have our own reasons for coming to Fargo, for staying in Fargo and what we value about Fargo, but really when asked #whyfargo, isn't the best answer: why not?
