LITTLE FREE LIBRARY

This past summer I had the opportunity to serve my community of Grand Forks in a really great way. Through our JLGives Back project our office designed, built, and installed four Little Free Libraries throughout the city.

If you have never heard of Little Free Libraries then you are not alone. Little Free Libraries are part of a movement started in Wisconsin by a son looking to pay tribute to his mothier, a former school teacher. He created a model of a school house, filled it with books, and put it in his yard with a sign saying 'free books.' The little box of books were a success and started the Little Free Library movement. Currently, there are over 36,000 registered Little Free Libraries across the globe.

The goal of these boxes is simple; 'Take a book, leave a book." Little Free Libraries are placed throughout communities by local patrons who want to increase literacy in their communities. Books are replenished by people in the neighborhood and are free for anyone to take.

This became the goal for me and a group of coworkers - to build a series of Little Free Libraries for the city of Grand Forks, ND as a way to give back to our community. We saw the libraries as a way to connect neighborhoods, increase walkability, and spread literacy in our community. We started with a design competition at the office to generate ideas for designs, with a lofty goal of producing eight libraries in one summer. After we had designs and backing from local sponsors, we got to work. We met three times a week after work for three hours at a time building libraries and building connections. Over four months we spent close to 400 man hours on this effort, producing four little libraries to place throughout our community. In that time we also collected over 300 books to stock them with.

We were amazed at the response we received from our community. After a short article in the local paper, it seemed like every day one of us was getting a phone call or an email about how someone could get a library for their yard, or how excited they were for our project. We never imagined that our little library project would be such a hit in the community, or that it would make such an impact; both on our community and in our own lives.

I learned a lot through my involvement in this project. I learned that the literacy needs in Grand Forks are larger than I previously had thought. I was able to pick up a few new building skills in the process of translating a drawing to reality.  I made connection with people in my community I would have never met otherwise, getting to hear their stories and the reasons behind their excitement for our project. Lastly, I made lasting connections with the people I work with.

It was truly amazing to see the response we got from the community and how excited people were for these little boxes filled with books. I feel very lucky to work for a company that encourages us to give back to our community and make a difference. This project was a highlight of my summer and I’m excited to see the lasting impact this project will make on my community.
